Over one week come witness paintings, photography, installation, film and performance works inspired by the dark side of psychedelia, The Process Church Of The Final Judgement, The Church Of Satan, Aleister Crowley & his Thelemites, LSD, Underground Comix, Black Light posters, the Manson Family, conspiracy theories, urban myths, Heavy Metal, Hammer Horror, etc. Come To The Sabbat expands upon artist Jason Atomic’s ongoing ‘Satanic Mojo’ project, inspired by the continuing influence on pop culture of the occult revivals of 1960s/70s/80s.
There will be no censorship or restrictions on content, be it the lampooning of trademarked characters, sex, drugs and violence (in fact all those are highly encouraged). An important part of this exercise is to kick back against the current rise of "politically correct" censorship, the worship of corporate bodies, religious intolerance & the curtailing and errosion of hard-won personal freedoms and cival liberties.
The exhibition features original artwork for the Satanic Mojo Sigil by rock legend (and practicing witch) Jinx Dawson of 60s acid rock band Coven. Jinx is credited with being the person who introduced the 'Sign Of The Devil' horned hand pose to the music scene. Alongside will be original artwork by respected horror movie poster artist Graham Humphreys who was also responsible for the Nightmare On Elm Street & Evil Dead poster campaigns and The Cramps classic “Off The Bone” LP and designed the exhibition's poster.
Further highlights include : Original art by the notorious “Vampire Of Paris” serial killer Nico Claux; Prints by ‘forgotten’ surrealist Felix Labisse inspired by his interest in witchcraft and demonology; Selected work from Satanic Mojo Comix, including submissions by 2000AD & Deadline stars Garry Leach & Shaky Kane; and the Automatic drawings by UK underground legend Savage Pencil; hippy witch-cult dolls house installation by Manko and other original artworks by Espira, Karina Akopyan, Steven Johnson Leyba, Izaskun Gonzales and many more.
On display will be pages of transgressive comic art from the first 3 issues of ‘Satanic Mojo Comix’ , an anthology title in the vein of classic underground comic's Zap or Slow Death. Contributors to this anthology title include Jason Atomic, Shaky Kane, Savage Pencil, Dennis Franklin, Krent Able, Garry Leach and more. Issue #3 will be launched at Come To The Sabbat with a signing session on Thursday 20th Aug.
Satanic Mojo takes it's name from a notoriously potent batch of black LSD that warped the minds of it’s users with insane, arcane and apocalyptic visions as the ’Summer Of love’ made way for the years of ‘Bad Craziness’ that followed. We celebrate these legendary black blotters with “Black Acid Black Light” psychedelic posters, paintings and installations including works by Electric Wizard cover artist Andrew Labanaris, Jason Atomic and James ‘Gunsho’ Quigley.
This fluorescent freak-out will be enhanced with the addition of a Burroughs/Gysin dream machine to help viewers break on through to the other side.
Breathing life back into the past, we will be creating a special art installation called “Kid’s Room” replicating the bedroom of a “Satanic Panic” era heavy metal fan. Named after the late Kid Banano - a Milanese punk rocker and heavy metal fan. Raised Catholic he loved heavy metal, drugs and comic books and turned to black magick. He became part of the thriving 80s London underground squat/art scene and is a perfect example of the ‘Satanic Panic’ era. On display are several artefacts from his collection and examples of his handiwork. Complete with record collection, VHS video nasties, Role Playing games, patched denim battle jackets, comics, toys and satanic patchwork quilts. Recalling those dark days of the 1980s when right-wing zealots started playing records backwards looking for hidden messages and were convinced that watching so-called video nasties would turn us into a legion of damned and delinquent serial killers or worse!
Contains work of a graphic, erotic and satirical nature, suitable for open minded adult intellectuals only.
