Californian singer returns to Hackney
LOS ANGELES-based haunting melodist Dorian Wood is back in town with a one-off gig at Apiary Studios on Friday.
The soulful, mesmerising and ferocious artist's music is a heady mix of passionate folk, harmonious soul and gripping, anguish fuelled folk. The gig will mark the end of a European tour to support his eclectic album 'Rattle Rattle'.
We caught up with Dorian while he was still on the road in Belgium to get the lowdown on Hackney, naughty dreams and Valentine’s Day.
Have you had any strange requests during your career?
We tried to get paid in coins at some of our first tour gigs. Shiny coins remind us of gold, which is what royals indulge themselves in, and we wanted these conditions to be met in order to deliver a finer performance. I think we've done nicely without the coins.
What does Valentine’s Day mean to you, if anything?
It gives people jobs for two whole weeks, and then there is discounted chocolate the week following Valentine's Day, which is very special to me.
Last dream you remember having?
I was at Disneyland with my family and I vomited myself, which led to nudity and then some sexual nonsense that I prefer not to discuss.
Was it your choice to end the European tour in London?
No, but I'm delighted that this is the case, as I have a sea of beautiful friends in London! It's going to be a very special evening.
I understand you played in Hackney last year. You’re back! Did it leave a positive impression?
It did! We were treated very nicely last time, and there was a magnificent Thai restaurant we went to.
What does Hackney have that other areas of London don’t?
It has a wonderful manager at the Hackney Attic who was very patient with me last time after I overstayed my welcome due to inebriation.
What are your immediate and long term plans for the future?
These are two questions, but I think I can answer them by saying that I hope to be about 5 waist sizes slimmer in the short term, and 4 waist sizes larger in the long term. I also look forward to returning to London very, very soon!
Thank you Dorian.
Hurry to get the last remaining tickets for this exclusive gig at Apairy Studios on Hackney Road tomorrow.
