Modern Panic is a riotous celebration of the subversive, featuring over 70 artists exploring the human psyche through pop surrealism, dark art, magic realism and more, for these most uncertain of times. For it’s momentous tenth anniversary Modern Panic comes to Truman Brewery from 8th - 17th November with a challenging exhibition of surreal, controversial and provocative art.

Panic Ephemera: Private View and Exhibition Launch
Friday 8 November 2019
An opportunity to meet the artists, see the art before the exhibition opens to the public, and experience live performances: Kasia Zawadzka premieres a new work entitled ‘Ill Lit’; Barbara Taylor presents Theatre for One, an intimate dream-like journey exploring the mysteries, romances and terrors of childhood; Francis Marion Moseley Wilson tells fables while self-suturing and mixing materials of taxidermy onto her own; in homage to St Sebastian, Lise Boucon invite you to draw and write on her body; and Jylle Navarro in collaboration with Sarah White, Stephanie Osztreicher and Lilith Newson evolve from an anthropoidic state, shed their exoskeleton and become a transformed metamorphic being..

The first of two diverse showcases of riotous acts by some innovative and masterful live art practitioners: The Red Rebel Brigade symbolises the common blood we share with all species, that unifies us and makes us one, illuminating the magic realm beneath the surface and inviting people to enter in; Philip Bedwell examines barriers in gender and nationality and how perceptions can be transcended; Syban charts the depths of insecurity, dreams and desires, and the hum to return to the primordial monster we once were; Gabriella Jeans in collaboration with acclaimed alchemist & scientist Dr Gregory Gregori, invite you to participate in a ritual of the occult, oscillating between the physical, mental and spiritual realms; and a special guest to be announced shortly.

Panic Sermon Act II
Saturday 16th November 2018
A second evening of radical, confrontational and beautiful performances bring this year’s Modern Panic to a close: Sara Green’s ode to the suppressed mania of ‘holding it together’. Beautiful, silly, disturbingly violent ; Tom Cassani trained in sleight of hand, misdirection and prestidigitation and now use these skills and his body as a site of deceit to explore truth, honesty, manipulation and fabrication; Karolina Urbaniak & Martin Bladh’s multimedia work based on Antonin Artaud’s apocalyptic manifesto from 1937, envisions the end of the world and the death of God through a series of cataclysmic occurrences of Artaudian cruelty ; Snake Fervor & Ian The Bloody Poet explore the fine line between love and obsession, passion, self destruction, codependency, toxic relationships, jealousy and paranoia.; witness Bill Duffy’s ongoing work to recreate the scars on the right side of his body on the left in order to create symmetry and rewrite traumatic memory.

Modern Panic comes to Truman Brewery from 8th - 17th November to celebrate its momentous tenth anniversary of surreal, controversial and provocative art.

For the past decade this annual exhibition has spearheaded and given a voice to artists whose work does not fit traditional galleries. Its ethos embodies how art should elicit a response, cause a reaction and be transformative, by challenging audiences with its disruptive energy, through a variety of mediums; including fine art, sculpture, photography, live art, film and artist talks

Highlights include:

H.R. Giger’s concept art developed the Alien sci-fi film franchise, with his fascinating surrealistic biomechanical creations. An otherworldly synthesis of horror and grotesque merged with flesh and machine. Brian Froud is a prolific artist exploring the fantasy realm, famed for his work as conceptual and costume designer for The Dark Crystal (film & new Netflix series). Roger Ballen’s otherworldly and surrealistic photographic works visually explore the human psyche.

Lucy Sparrow transforms familiar items from everyday life into surreal hand stitched felt-object caricatures.
Ralph Steadman is renowned for his political and social caricatures and for his collaboration and friendship with writer Hunter S. Thompson. Paul Toupet’s mysterious sculptures evoke a playful or disquieting vision of lost childhood. Gaston Ugalde is the "Andean Warhol" of the South American art world, presenting his collage work with coca leaf (the raw material for the manufacture of the drug cocaine).

Rising stars to look out for:

Barbora Balek is a Czech Republic artist whose powerful political sculptural work explores human identity and socio-political issues. Brontis Jodorowsky, from actor to artist, premiering deeply poetic archetypal art from the realms of the subconscious. Yuri Zupancic intimate and minute work painted with a single hair on to microchip canvases.

Liam Brandon Murray’s ‘wearable sculptures’ are exquisitely layered haute couture filled with iconographical references. Sonia Tibacov creates bizarrely beautiful weird and wonderful renaissance-era style creature portraiture. Alex Rose’s dark humour infuses his living breathing hyper-realistic sculptures.

Modern Panic exhibition returns for it's 9th edition

Modern Panic, an annual exhibition of surreal, controversial and provocative art curated by Guerilla Zoo founder James Elphick, is reincarnated in 2018 for Modern Panic IX. Bringing together over 70 visual artists and live art practitioners offering a commentary on our chaotic contemporary world and the darker reaches of human nature with works that shock, disturb and confront.

Highlights include; London street artist Dr D, a.k.a Subvertiser, embeds his artistic interventions within the urban landscape as a wry protest against the insidious proliferation of mainstream news, media and advertising. Liam Brandon Murray’s ostentatious ‘wearable sculptures’ are an exquisitely layered, couture melange of materials and iconographical references. Qixuan Lim from Singapore’s grisly yet adorable works traverse the real and imagined worlds with a pop-surrealistic aesthetic.

Also featured: the Baroque-inspired paintings of Gianluca Pisano which use illumination and shadow to both explore the contemporary human condition and allude to a realm that remains beyond its grasp; Seamus Moran, whose finely crafted sculptural reimaginings interrupt our experience to question our conventional understanding of and assumptions about the world; Rebecca Mason uses neon for her reflection on individual and collective responsibility; and the visceral figurative paintings of Luke Francis Haseler allude to the violence of our basal desires and instincts.

The exhibition includes work from rising stars of the art world such as Muazma Mushtaq, who balances a sensitivity to materials with delicate craftmanship in her reflection on life and death; Chris Campbell, whose interest in storytelling, film and figurative sculpture combine to bring the grotesque and unimaginable into reality, and Jixuan Chen, who masterfully integrates traditional Chinese painting techniques with Eastern mythologies.

Modern Panic Opens This Week + Live Art Programme Announced!

Modern Panic, curated by Guerrilla Zoo founder, James Elphick, returns for its eighth incarnation to hold up a mirror to the twisted psyche of contemporary society, and the darker inner reaches of our own subconscious minds. Featuring more than 50 acclaimed international artists and live art practitioners, whose controversial works explore the surreal, the political and the taboo.

Roger Ballen, one of photography’s most significant provocateurs of our times, has spent more than forty years on a psychological and existential journey through black and white film. His stark monochrome works nod to both the tradition of documentary photography and to contemporary popular culture but are a strange new reimagining of both, heavily laced with psychodrama. The exhibition features both stills and films from his recent collaboration with controversial hip hop group Die Antwoord.

Also featured: poster artist for the ‘Free Assange’ campaign, Sam Hamilton, aka. Toonpunk; Ellie Pennick’s tendentious sculpture of the UK Prime Minister, Theresa May; the perverse creations of New York based figurative artist, Ronald Gonzalez; Emily Robinson’s corporeal reflections on Body Dysmorphic Disorder; the contorted portraits of viral photographer Ben Hopper; Mehreen Hashmi’s reflections on her survival of sexual abuse in Pakistan; the intricate, beautiful and strange illustrations of Iain Macarthur; and Natalie Shau’s literature-inspired, fantastical digital masterpieces.

Our arts programme also includes an arresting selection of short art-films from international artists Anita Zaman, Guli Silberstein, Dolly Sen, David John Beesley, Boldizsar CR, Wednesday Kim, Caitlin Alexandra, Emma Allen, Katia Ganfield, Dion Kitson, Dominic Negus, Andrea Nevi, Elinor Rowlands, Zoe Simon, and Shona Davies, Dave Monaghan & Jon Klein.

A second evening of radical, confrontational and beautiful performances bring this year’s Modern Panic to a close: world-renowned shibari practitioner Skinny-Red Art presents a dynamic exploration of sexual abuse; Syban opens the passage to Somewhere Else through a ritual of controlled pain; Jasmine Dhingra becomes a personality scrutinised through layers and cracks with a violent liberation; and an alt-drag cabaret challenge to social norms is offered by Melanie Menard.

The 'Enfant Terrible' of The Art World Returns to London for it's Eighth Birthday

Explore the thinly veiled world of your subconscious and the psyche of modern society through a unique and powerful collection of surreal, controversial & provocative international artists. Modern Panic VIII is Curated by James Elphick, founder of Guerrilla Zoo.

This year we are proud to feature one of the most influential and important photographic artists of the 21st century. For over forty years Roger Ballen has explored the recesses of what we call reality, his version an entropic mirror to our own. A sacrament of what it is to be strange, Ballen has always defied the rational, pushing boundaries with effortless finesse. More recently his works have dipped into the mainstream through collaborations with rave-rap group Die Antwoord.

This year we feature the works of over 50 artists. Among them: Sam Hamilton (aka Toonpunk) is a political artist whose work of Julian Assange giving his infamous speech at the Ecuadorian Embassy in 2012 has become the poster for the ‘Free Assange’ campaign supporting the non-profit website that publishes secret information, news leaks, and classified media, WikiLeaks. Ellie Pennick will exhibit her controversial sculpture of Prime Minister Theresa May. Far from shy about tackling matters such as politics and society, she often sexualises her pieces for satirical perspective. New York-based Ronald Gonzalez will bring a glimpse of the confrontational and estranged, exploring a dissolute image of human perversities and misfortune.

Emily Robinson explores mental illness and taboo subjects relating to the body and the human condition, in particular Body Dysmorphia Disorder and the effect it has on its sufferers. The fine art photography of Ben Hopper has often gone viral due to his thought-provoking images. Closely collaborating with local and international performance artists, Hopper galvanizes with a stunning series of contorted portraits.

Mehreen Hashmi’s paintings are a narration of her emotional struggle as a survivor of sexual abuse in Pakistan, and a statement about the psychological and emotional impact of abuse on children, as well as adults. Iain Macarthur’s surreal and beautiful illustrations examine ordinary people in an unusual way, embellishing on subtle hints to transform faces into something entirely bizarre. Our poster design this year was created by the talented Natalie Shau, whose digital masterpieces are inspired by Gothic horror fiction, fairy tales and Russian literary classics

The Modern Panic exhibition series is inspired by the work of the Panic Movement, birthed by the artists Alejandro Jodorowsky, Fernando Arrabal and Roland Topor, who created provocative live arts events in France during the 1960s. The works’ intended aim was to slice through the bourgeois art world and to be the catalyst of thought liberation within the viewer. Modern Panic follows in the footsteps of this movement, and exhibits the new wave of modern provocateurs.

Gaze into the Dark Psyche of Modern Life at Modern Panic Exhibition

Guerrilla Zoo's acclaimed annual Modern Panic exhibition returns to London for it's seventh edition. Curated by James Elphick, the show features a unique collection of surreal, controversial and provocative international artists and live art practitioners exploring the dark psyche of modern life.

This year's exhibition brings you co-founder and member of dance music pioneers The KLF, Jimmy Cauty who has distinguished himself as a musician, artist and cultural provocateur through fusions of high art and popular mediums, often to spectacular or controversial effect. Alongside, one of the most influential and innovative figures in twentieth century occultism, Austin Osman Spare. A natural artist and psychic, his work was full of grotesque, sexualized human figures and magical symbols. Spare’s explorations of the creative focus gave rise to an ontology and body of work that departs radically from conventional occultism, both then and now.

Over 50 contributing artists are participating over 8 days coinciding with Frieze as an antidote to bland commercial art. Modern Panic will be featuring rising stars of the new wave; political agitators Maslen & Mehra; hyper-realist metalsmith Mike Turner; surrealist master Gianluca Pisano; art and science meld together by Pascale Pollier; Peter Hanmer's figurative tableaux’s of varying scales populated by animal bone protagonists; and Emma Hopkins' intimate and dynamic portraits, amongst many more talented artists from around the world gradually being announced!

Panic Sermons on Sunday 9th & Wednesday 12th October showcases a collection of riotous acts by new and ground breaking live art practitioners. Over two events, there will be a diverse selection of performances involving movement, strength, surreallism, destruction, ritual and eroticism featuring Foolish People, Syban, Dunja Kuhn, Philip Bedwell, Esther Bunting, Natalie Ramus, Julieann O'Malley, Georg Bütow, Robert Reynolds, Venus Raven. Modern Panic VI explores the dark fringes of outsider art

Guerrilla Zoo's acclaimed annual Modern Panic exhibition returns for it's sixth incarnation. Curated by James Elphick, the show features a unique collection of surreal, controversial and provocative international artists and live art practitioners who explore the dark fringes of art.

This year's exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see the work of political agitator and savage satirst, gonzo artist Ralph Steadman, who is famed for his work with Hunter S Thompson and William S Burroughs. Also exhibiting is the artist best known for his countless collaborations with Neil Gaiman (Sandman, MirrorMask), his illustration of Batman's Arkham Asylum along with his album art for countless musicians, from The Rolling Stones to Bill Laswell, the irrepressible Dave McKean.

With over 60 contributing artists, show highlights include engaging works by the phenomenal Franko B, felt provocateur Lucy Sparrow, ceramist artivist Carrie Reichardt and Mutoid Waste robotic artist Giles Walker.

Alongside are the rising insurgent upstarts, including mind-warping street artist The Krah; Danish surrealist David Dellagi; uncompromising social political artist Glenn Fitzpatrick's take on the oil industry; the futuristic insectoid mechanist works of Mike Turner; photorealistic pop artist LG White's foray into the fall of classical civilisation; Sarah Jane Jones' exceptional african child sculpture, a study which tackles poverty and hunger; and Roisin Larkin's branded body parts, a foreboding insight into the future of consumerism.

There will be a radical live art and performance programme kicking off with the Panic Ephermeral Live Art opening night on Friday 13th November. An opportunity to meet many of the exhibiting artists and to see immersive and subversive performances throughout the evening, the show includes the legendary Louis Fleischauer's Aesthetic Meat Front presenting a powerful work not for the faint of heart; a one-on-one virtual reality, fully immersive experience by Trendscendence; a performance homage to Ralph Steadman by the fiery Snake Fervor and durational installations by MisSa Blue and Glenn Fitzpatrick. Come To The Sabbat is a week long festival of ‘Dark Arts’ expanding upon artist Jason Atomic’s ongoing ‘Satanic Mojo’ project, inspired by the continuing influence on pop culture of the occult revivals of 1960s, 70s & 80s.

The exhibition features original artwork for the Satanic Mojo Sigil by rock legend (and practicing witch) Jinx Dawson of 60s acid rock band Coven. Jinx is credited with being the person who introduced the 'Sign Of The Devil' horned hand pose to the music scene.
Alongside will be original artwork by respected horror movie poster artist Graham Humphreys who was also responsible for the Nightmare On Elm Street & Evil Dead poster campaigns and The Cramps classic “Off The Bone” LP

Further highlights include : Original art by the notorious “Vampire Of Paris” serial killer Nico Claux; Prints by ‘forgotten’ surrealist Felix Labisse inspired by his interest in witchcraft and demonology; Selected work from Satanic Mojo Comix, including submissions by 2000AD & Deadline stars Garry Leach & Shaky Kane; and the Automatic drawings by UK underground legend Savage Pencil; and many other talented artists.

Satanic Mojo takes it's name from a notoriously potent batch of black LSD that warped the minds of it’s users with insane, arcane and apocalyptic visions as the ’Summer Of love’ made way for the years of ‘Bad Craziness’ that followed. We celebrate these legendary black blotters with “Black Acid Black Light” psychedelic black light posters, paintings & UV installations including works by Electric Wizard cover artist Andrew Labanaris, and James ‘Gunsho’ Quigley.

Breathing life back into the 80s, we will be creating a special art installation called “Kid’s Room” replicating the bedroom of a “Satanic Panic” era heavy metal fan. Named after the late Kid Banano - a Milanese punk rocker and heavy metal fan. Raised Catholic he loved heavy metal, drugs and comic books and turned to black magick. He became part of the thriving 80s London underground squat/art scene and is a perfect example of the ‘Satanic Panic’ era. On display are several artefacts from his collection and examples of his handiwork.

Come To The Sabbat contains work of a graphic, erotic and satirical nature, suitable for open minded adult intellectuals only.

Charles Bronson and The Death of Britain's Most Notorious Prisoner

Guerrilla Zoo salute the demise of the Bronson with a final exhibition of his unique art works, curated by James Elphick. The Death of Bronson celebrates the art and literature of Charles Bronson.

Charlie is one of the highest-profile criminals, often cited by the media as 'Britain's most violent prisoner’ and has been featured in books, interviews, and studies in prison reform and treatment. For those not well versed in the life and times of Charlie, he was born 6 December 1952 in Luton. Michael Peterson as he was first known, was first imprisoned in 1974, originally convicted at the age of 22 for armed robbery at a Post Office during which he stole £26.18. His sentence was repeatedly extended for crimes committed within prison as Charlie fought against the system. While in prison, he began making a name for himself as a loose cannon, often fighting convicts and prison officers. He also embarked on one-man rooftop protests. Regarded as a "problem prisoner", he was moved at least 120 times through Her Majesty's Prison Service.

What was originally a seven-year term stretched out to a fourteen-year sentence that resulted in his first wife, Irene, with whom he had a son, leaving him. He was released on 30 October 1988, and began a bare-knuckle boxing career in the East End of London. His boxing promoter Paul Edmunds was unhappy with his name and suggested he change it to Charles Bronson (although it was never legally changed). He spent merely sixty-nine days as a free man before he was arrested again for suspected robbery. He was released again on 9 November 1992, spending fifty-three days as a free man before being arrested and returned to prison for planning another robbery and continued to be a difficult inmate, instigating numerous hostage situations.

He has spent over 40 years in prison mostly in solitary confinment, spending a total of just four months and nine days out of custody since 1974. In 2008 a film was made of his life, 'Bronson' with English actor Tom Hardy in the lead role. In November 2011, when the film was screen on TV, Charlie finally got to watch it - Watch the 'Bronson' trailer.

In 2014 he announced that he was changing his name again, this time to Charles Salvador in a mark of respect to one of his favourite artists, the late Salvador Dali and to distance himself from his existing reputation and the 'Bronson' stigma. His art has occupied him for the past seventeen years now. His work is quite unique and is sent to and exhibited around the world. He has published fifteen books and numerous prizes for his art and poetry, including six awards from The Koestler Trust.

Charlie's art is most famously recognised for the control bubbles, restraint and forced drug depictions. But his art goes way beyond the Prison/Asylum pieces synonymous with his name. Charlie also draws delicate animal portraits, cartonised creatures which betray his softer side. He draws inspiration on a daily basis, from moving imagery as well as printed matter. Anything around him can inspire a piece of art. Spiders are one of the subjects closely associated with Prisoner BT1314. Charlie can take the simplicity of a spider, add a line of text and make it poignant or comedy genius. Charlie also gives this comedic tone to his Flowers. A simple idea, injected with humour, which brings pleasure to so many. He does successful characterisations of celebs as well as tribute pieces for close friends and family, when they have lost a loved one.

Charlie is passionate about many charities and donates both money and his art has raised thousands for numerous causes. Of his art he has said: "The greatest dream in my life is would be to be accepted in the art world and to live as a free man, that's my one dream left."

Contrary to popular belief, Charlie has never harmed anyone outside of the prison walls. He has never taken a life. Charlie is still a Cat A prisoner, kept in solitary confinement conditions. He is allowed out to exercise and collect his food only.

In a hand-written statement on his website, Charlie stated that "The old me dried up...Bronson came alive in 1987. He died in 2014." He also announced that he was renouncing violence and wished to distance himself from those who sought to associate themselves with him due to his past reputation, commenting that "It’s non-violent all the way. It’s a peaceful journey from here on...Coz my heart is at peace and my mind is set on art."
